Installation Guide REV 2.1
01
Open the .dmg — drag Spokojstvo to Applications
Mount the disk image and drag the app into your Applications folder.
02
Double-click to launch — click Done on the warning
macOS will say it can't check the app for malicious software. This is expected — click Done to dismiss.
03
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway
Scroll down to the Security section, click Open Anyway next to Spokojstvo, then enter your Mac password. Done — it opens normally from now on.
⚠ "App is damaged" message? Open Terminal and run:
xattr -cr /Applications/Spokojstvo.app — then try launching again.
01
Run Spokojstvo.exe — click More info → Run anyway
Windows SmartScreen flags new apps without an established reputation. Click More info, then Run anyway to proceed.
02
VPN connects automatically — icon appears in your taskbar tray (bottom-right)
Look for the Spokojstvo icon in the hidden icons area (the ^ arrow next to the clock). The app runs in the background.
03
To disconnect: right-click tray icon → Disconnect & Quit
Closing the window only hides the app. Always use Disconnect & Quit from the tray to fully stop the VPN and restore your normal connection.

"Spokojstvo is the first free VPN we've seen in years that we'd recommend without caveats. The privacy policy is short because there's genuinely nothing to hide."

"Punches well above its price point — which is zero. The Shadowsocks implementation is solid and the no-account model is a genuine differentiator."

Common Questions

Is Spokojstvo really free?

Yes — completely free, with no hidden tiers, no trial periods, and no credit card required. We operate on a community model: users who run the desktop app optionally share a small amount of bandwidth as an exit node, which helps sustain the network. You benefit from others doing the same. There is no premium version and no features locked behind a paywall.

Do you keep logs of my activity?

No. We do not log browsing history, DNS queries, traffic content, or connection timestamps. The only data we store is a peer ID (a random string assigned to your device), your platform (macOS or Windows), and your IP address — which is needed for connection routing and is deleted after 30 days. See our Privacy Policy for the full list.

How does it work technically?

Spokojstvo uses Shadowsocks — an open-source, audited proxy protocol originally designed to resist deep packet inspection. When you connect, your traffic is encrypted with ChaCha20-IETF-Poly1305 on your device, tunnelled to one of our exit servers (New York, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Seoul), and exits there. Websites see the server's IP address, not yours.

Is it safe and secure?

Yes. ChaCha20-IETF-Poly1305 is a modern authenticated encryption cipher used by major protocols including TLS 1.3 and WireGuard. It is fast, resistant to timing attacks, and provides strong confidentiality and integrity guarantees. Shadowsocks itself is open-source and has been independently reviewed. We do not intercept, inspect, or store your traffic.

Why is it free if other VPNs charge?

Most paid VPNs charge because they have marketing budgets, investor expectations, and large corporate overhead. We have none of that. Spokojstvo was built by a small team of engineers who wanted a genuinely private VPN that didn't treat users as a product. Infrastructure costs are kept low through efficient architecture. We accept voluntary donations but will never require payment or sell data to offset costs.

Will it slow down my internet?

There is always some overhead when routing traffic through an additional server. In practice most users see a 10–20% reduction in raw throughput, which is imperceptible for browsing and streaming. Speed depends on your distance to the chosen exit node — Frankfurt and Amsterdam are fastest for European users, New York for the Americas, Seoul for East Asia. We don't artificially throttle connections.

Is it legal to use a VPN?

VPNs are legal in the vast majority of countries. A small number of countries restrict or ban VPN use — including China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and a few others. It is your responsibility to understand the laws in your jurisdiction. Using a VPN does not make illegal activity legal; it only provides network-level privacy for lawful use.

How do I uninstall it?

macOS: Drag Spokojstvo.app from Applications to Trash. To remove config files: open Terminal and run rm -rf ~/.spokojstvo. The LaunchAgent is removed automatically.

Windows: Open Task Manager, end any Spokojstvo or frpc processes, then delete the .exe file. To remove config files: delete the folder at %USERPROFILE%\.spokojstvo.
